In a powerful appeal to the White House, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Defense, two of the nation’s leading health experts are calling for urgent federal intervention to address a dangerous nutritional imbalance in the American diet.

Renowned fatty acid researcher Dr. Artemis P. Simopoulos and endocannabinoid system expert Chip Paul have co-authored a white paper titled “Addressing the Omega-6 and Omega-3 Imbalance in the U.S. Food Supply.” The report outlines how an overconsumption of omega-6 fatty acids—primarily from seed oils—and a widespread deficiency in omega-3s are fueling a national crisis in chronic disease, immune dysfunction, and mental health.

“Our research clearly shows that this imbalance is a major contributor to obesity, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, neurodegenerative conditions, and compromised immune function,” said Dr. Simopoulos. “It is a solvable crisis, but it demands immediate attention.”

The white paper points to a heavily omega-6-skewed American diet as a driver of inflammation and disease risk. It also highlights how this imbalance overstimulates the body’s endocannabinoid system, compounding problems like obesity, depression, and anxiety—particularly in youth. Military readiness and national cognitive resilience are also at risk.

“This isn’t just a health issue; it’s a matter of national security,” said Chip Paul. “Our armed forces, our children, and our entire population are being impacted by dietary choices we can—and must—correct.”

Also voicing support for the initiative is nutritionist and health advocate Robert Ferguson, who has long warned about the dangers of omega fatty acid imbalance. “We’re witnessing the consequences of moving from a natural 1:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3s to an inflammatory 20:1 ratio or worse,” said Ferguson. “That kind of imbalance is like fueling a fire with no water in sight—it’s one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic disease in this country.”

Ferguson added, “We can’t keep ignoring the science. Correcting this imbalance is one of the most impactful and cost-effective steps we can take to improve health outcomes, reduce inflammation, and reverse conditions like insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and fatty liver.”

To address the crisis, the authors propose forming a Federal Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Committee under the Department of Health and Human Services. The committee would assess the imbalance, create new dietary guidelines, and spearhead reforms across the food industry. Public education campaigns and physician training would be central to the initiative.

The authors argue that realigning the nation’s fatty acid intake—reducing omega-6 seed oils and increasing access to omega-3-rich foods—could significantly cut healthcare costs, improve public health, and enhance national resilience.

Dr. Simopoulos is widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on omega fatty acids and their role in human health. Chip Paul is a national leader in endocannabinoid research and its connection to diet, metabolism, and chronic disease.

Their message is clear: fixing this imbalance is not just a nutritional adjustment—it’s a necessary step toward restoring the health, strength, and future of the nation.
