EBOO: What It Is, How It Works, and What You Should Know Before Trying It

I am asked all the time whether certain supplements are good or bad, and which health-related procedures are worth doing. People want to feel better, have more energy, and avoid wasting time and money on things that do not work.

I first heard about Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation, also called EBOO, after watching a news segment about it. It sounded impressive. Blood cleaning. Oxygen. Advanced technology. Like many people, I was curious.

So, I did what I always do. I took a deep dive and started learning how it works and what the science really says. It did not take long for me to realize that EBOO is a procedure with far more hype than healing.

Not long after that, a friend of mine, someone who is always looking for the “secret sauce,” told me she was about to get EBOO. She was excited and talking so fast that I could not get a word in. I just smiled and wished her luck.

A few weeks later, EBOO came up again. This time, her excitement was gone. You could see the frustration on her face. Without getting into the details, she felt she wasted a significant amount of money, and the experience was horrible.

In my experience, chasing procedures like EBOO often happens when people ignore the real root problem, an omega-6 to omega-3 imbalance that disrupts cell signaling and makes any “advanced” treatment far less effective.

That is why it is essential to understand what EBOO actually does, which clinics say it is for, how much it costs, what people are reporting afterward, and why improving cell membrane fluidity and cell signaling should come first.

What Is Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation?

Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation means:

    • Extracorporeal means outside the body
    • Blood oxygenation means adding oxygen to the blood
    • Ozonation means exposing blood to ozone gas

Here is how the process works:

    1. Blood is taken from a vein
    2. The blood flows through a machine outside the body
    3. The blood is filtered and mixed with oxygen and ozone gas
    4. The blood is returned to the body

A simple way to think about it is this:
It is like a mini dialysis session, but with ozone added.

Important to know:
The Food and Drug Administration disapproves of Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation for medical treatment in the United States.

How Clinics Say Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation Works

Clinics that offer EBOO often claim it can:

    • Increase oxygen delivery to tissues
    • Filter toxins and waste from the blood
    • Kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi
    • Boost immune function
    • Improve circulation
    • Improve mitochondrial energy production

The main idea is that ozone creates stress in the body. This stress is supposed to signal the body to turn on antioxidants, such as glutathione. One of the first red flags for me is that glutathione is made inside cells, yet this explanation ignores the most powerful antioxidant made in the human body. That antioxidant is produced in the gut and is called Indole-3-Propionic Acid (IPA).

IPA is produced by healthy gut bacteria when the gut is properly supported. No blood-based machine can replace that process.

Which Clinics Say Benefits From Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation

Clinics commonly market EBOO to people who are told they have:

    • Low energy or chronic fatigue
    • Brain fog
    • Inflammation
    • Autoimmune conditions
    • Chronic infections
    • Long-term illness
    • “Toxin buildup”
    • Poor circulation
    • Anti-aging concerns

In many cases, these symptoms are signs of poor cell signaling, chronic inflammation, and gut dysfunction, not dirty blood. This is why I continue to stress the importance of improving cell membrane fluidity and restoring a healthy omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio. When that balance is restored, many of the reasons people are drawn to EBOO are already being addressed naturally.

How Much Does Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation Cost?

EBOO is expensive.

Most clinics in the United States charge:

    • $900 to $2,500 per session, depending on location and clinic
    • Multiple sessions are often recommended
    • Total costs can reach several thousand dollars

Insurance does not cover this procedure. All costs are paid out of pocket.

Why Cell Membrane Health Matters More Than Machines

Your body already has a system for healing, detoxing, and protecting itself. That system depends on cell communication, also called cell signaling.

Cells communicate through their outer layer, called the cell membrane.

Think of the cell membrane like a smart security gate

    • It opens for what belongs inside
    • It blocks what does not
    • It controls how much comes and goes

Healthy cell membranes are selective and protective, not leaky.

When membranes are flexible and healthy:

    • Oxygen enters easily
    • Nutrients enter when needed
    • Waste exits efficiently
    • Signals are clear and controlled

When membranes are stiff or damaged:

    • Communication breaks down
    • Waste gets trapped
    • Inflammation rises
    • Energy drops

What damages membranes?

    • Too much omega-6 fat
    • Not enough omega-3 fat
    • Low polyphenol intake
    • Ongoing oxidative stress

This is the real issue for most people.

Why Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation Can Backfire

Ozone is a strong oxidant. That means it can damage cells if the body is not prepared.

If a person already has rigid or inflamed cell membranes:

    • Ozone can damage red blood cells
    • Oxidative stress can rise too high
    • Inflammation can increase
    • Mitochondria can become stressed

This is like revving a car engine without oil.
The engine does not improve. It breaks down faster.

EBOO does not fix membrane health. It adds stress to an already stressed system.

What Negatives Are People Reporting After Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation?

Common short-term problems reported

    • Extreme fatigue
    • Headaches
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Brain fog
    • Body aches
    • Temporary worsening of symptoms
    • Bruising or soreness at the needle site

These reactions are often called “detox reactions,” but they are signs of stress.

More serious risks reported in medical literature

    • Gas bubbles entering the bloodstream
    • Stroke-like symptoms and neurologic injury
    • Infection from blood handling
    • Blood clots
    • Damage to red blood cells

These risks help explain why this treatment remains controversial.

What the Food and Drug Administration Says About Ozone

The Food and Drug Administration has stated that ozone is a toxic gas with no proven safe medical use. To kill germs, ozone would need to be used at levels that damage human tissue.

Callout Box: Why I Don’t Recommend EBOO

Why I Don’t Recommend Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation

I do not recommend EBOO because it adds stress to the blood instead of fixing the root cause of the problem.

When the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is out of balance, cell membranes become rigid, gut health suffers, and cell signaling breaks down. Adding ozone in that state increases damage rather than healing.

When omega balance, gut health, and cell membrane fluidity are restored, the body already manages antioxidants, oxygen delivery, and detoxification on its own.

In my opinion, EBOO is unnecessary, expensive, and driven more by trends than by biology.

Why Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation Is So Appealing

EBOO sounds appealing because it:

    • Sounds advanced
    • Feels fast
    • Looks high-tech
    • Promises results without daily effort

But health does not work like a software update.
You cannot fix years of inflammation in one session.

What Makes More Sense for Long-Term Health

A safer and more effective approach is to:

    • Balance omega-6 and omega-3 fats
    • Support gut bacteria that produce IPA
    • Improve cell membrane fluidity
    • Increase polyphenol intake
    • Reduce chronic inflammation
    • Support mitochondria with movement, sleep, and nutrition

When cell signaling works, the body already knows what to do.

Final Takeaway

Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation are often marketed as powerful and advanced, but they are unnecessary, expensive, and risky.

If cell membranes and gut signaling are unhealthy, adding more stress to the system will not help. Healthy cells and a healthy gut make extreme treatments unnecessary.
