The Purpose of This Article
After more than thirty years as a clinical nutritionist, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of people improve their health. During that time, I’ve worked with people who wanted to lose weight, lower their blood pressure, improve their blood sugar, think more clearly, reduce inflammation, have more energy, support healthy aging, and simply feel better.

How the Cell Membrane Supports Life
Now that you understand what the cell membrane is and why it is so remarkable, let’s explore what it does.
Nutrients Must Enter the Cell
Think about the healthy foods you eat.
Vegetables.
Fruit.
Fish.
Lean protein.
Healthy fats.
Whole grains.
All of those foods provide nutrients your body needs.
But eating nutritious food is only the beginning.
Those nutrients must first be digested.
Then absorbed into your bloodstream.
Then transported throughout your body.
Eventually, many of those nutrients must cross the cell membrane before they can be used by the cell.
Only then can they help produce energy, repair tissues, build proteins, support normal metabolism, and perform countless other functions.
The same principle applies to vitamins and minerals.
They must reach the cell.
Then they must enter the cell.
Simply eating healthy food is important.
Helping your cells receive those nutrients is equally important.
Oxygen Must Also Reach the Cell
The same is true for oxygen.
Every breath you take delivers oxygen to your lungs.
Your red blood cells carry that oxygen throughout your body.
Eventually, oxygen must move from the bloodstream into tissues and ultimately into cells, where the mitochondria use it to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s primary source of cellular energy. ¹
Without oxygen, cells cannot efficiently produce the energy needed to sustain life.
Again, the cell membrane plays an important role in regulating the environment in which these processes occur.
Waste Must Leave the Cell
Just as nutrients and oxygen enter the cell, waste products must also leave.
Cells are constantly producing waste as part of normal metabolism.
If waste accumulated inside the cell indefinitely, the cell could no longer function properly.
The cell membrane helps regulate this continuous exchange.
Think of it as the sanitation department for a busy city.
Deliveries are constantly arriving.
Garbage trucks are constantly leaving.
Both are necessary.
Healthy cells depend upon that continuous movement.
Cells Constantly Communicate
One of the most fascinating discoveries in modern biology is that cells are constantly communicating with one another.
Your body is not simply a collection of isolated cells.
It is an incredibly organized communication network.
Cells send chemical signals.
They receive signals.
They respond to signals.
This communication allows the body to coordinate everything from healing a wound to responding to exercise or fighting an infection.
Without communication, the body could not function as an integrated system.
Once again, the cell membrane plays an essential role because many of these signals begin at receptors located within the membrane itself.
Hormones Depend on Cellular Communication
Hormones provide one of the best examples of cellular communication.
Hormones act as chemical messengers.
They help coordinate countless functions throughout the body.
Some hormones are produced in specialized glands, while others are produced within different tissues throughout the body.
For example, estrogen is produced primarily by the ovaries before menopause. After menopause, smaller amounts continue to be produced in other tissues, including fat tissue, through an enzyme called aromatase. ²
Regardless of where estrogen is produced, it must leave the cells in which it is made before it can travel through the bloodstream and communicate with other cells throughout the body.
Those target cells contain receptors that recognize estrogen and respond to its signals.
This communication influences many normal biological processes, including reproductive health, bone health, cardiovascular function, and brain function.
The health of the cell membrane helps support this remarkable communication system.
Insulin Also Communicates Through the Cell Membrane
Another excellent example is insulin.
Earlier in my career, I noticed that many people thought of insulin only as a blood sugar hormone.
While insulin certainly helps regulate blood sugar, it also serves as a powerful communication molecule.
Insulin does not enter most cells to deliver its message.
Instead, it binds to specialized insulin receptors located within the cell membrane. ³
That interaction triggers a series of events inside the cell that help regulate glucose uptake, energy metabolism, and many other important biological functions.
When you begin looking at health from the cellular level, you realize just how much depends upon healthy communication between cells.
The Types of Fat in the Cell Membrane Matter
Earlier, we learned that the cell membrane is built primarily from phospholipids.
The types of fatty acids incorporated into those phospholipids influence the physical properties of the membrane.
Two fatty acids that have received considerable scientific attention are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Both belong to the omega-3 family of fatty acids.
EPA and DHA become incorporated into the phospholipids that make up cell membranes throughout the body. ⁴
Researchers have shown that the fatty acid composition of the membrane influences important membrane properties, including membrane fluidity.
This is one reason scientists developed the Omega-3 Index.
The Omega-3 Index
The Omega-3 Index measures the percentage of EPA and DHA present within the membranes of red blood cells. ⁵
Why red blood cells?
Because they circulate throughout the body for approximately 120 days and provide a practical way to evaluate long-term omega-3 status.
The Omega-3 Index does not diagnose disease.
It does not measure every aspect of cellular health.
But it does provide valuable information about one important component of the cell membrane.
In my practice, I have found this information extremely valuable because it replaces guessing with objective measurement.
Instead of wondering…
We can measure.
Instead of assuming…
We can know.
One Test Changed the Questions I Asked
The first time I began reviewing Omega-3 Index results alongside other markers of cellular health, I realized something.
I had been asking incomplete questions.
Instead of asking only,
“How much do you weigh?”
“How is your blood pressure?”
“How are you sleeping?”
I began asking another question.
“What do your cells look like?”
Not literally under a microscope.
But biologically.
What is the fatty acid composition of your cell membranes?
How much EPA and DHA have been incorporated?
What does your Omega-3 Index tell us?
What other cellular biomarkers can help us better understand the biological environment in which your cells are functioning?
Those questions changed the way I practiced nutrition.
They also changed the kinds of conversations I had with my clients.
Science Became Personal
Everything we’ve discussed so far has been based on biology.
Cells.
Cell membranes.
Hormones.
Energy.
Communication.
Measurements.
But over time, something happened.
The science became personal.
First with my own family.
Then with my clients.
Those experiences reinforced why I believe cellular health deserves a much larger place in the way we think about health.
I’d like to share several of those stories with you next.
When Science Became Personal
Earlier in this article, we explored why healthy cells are the foundation of every organ in the body. We also looked at the remarkable role the cell membrane plays in helping nutrients enter the cell, waste products leave the cell, and cells communicate with one another.
Understanding the science is important.
But for me, the science became much more meaningful when it became personal.
After working with thousands of people who wanted to improve their health, you begin to notice certain patterns. Some wanted too lose weight. Others wanted more energy. Some hoped to improve their blood pressure or blood sugar, while others were focused on healthy aging, memory, or reducing inflammation.
At first glance, their goals seemed very different.
But over time, I noticed something interesting.
No matter what health challenge someone was facing, I found myself asking the same question.
“What is happening at the cellular level?”
That question changed the way I practiced nutrition.
It also changed the way I looked at health.
The stories you’re about to read are not scientific research studies. They do not prove cause and effect, nor should they replace medical advice or the findings of carefully controlled clinical trials.
Instead, they are clinical observations that encouraged me to ask better questions, continue studying the science, and measure biology instead of making assumptions.
Each story is different.
Yet every one of them brought me back to the same place.
Healthy cells.
Clinical Observation #1
My Daughter, Felicity
One of the most meaningful experiences in my career didn’t happen in my office.
It happened at home.
When my daughter, Felicity, began having menstrual cycles, she experienced significant menstrual cramps and discomfort. Like any father, I wanted to help her.
At the time, I had already spent years studying nutrition, fatty acids, and cellular health. Because of that interest, we decided to measure her Omega-3 Index, which reflects the percentage of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) incorporated into the membranes of red blood cells. ¹
Her Omega-3 Index measured 3.0 percent.
That result indicated a relatively low level of EPA and DHA within her red blood cell membranes.
Over the following months, the primary change we made was improving her omega-3 status through nutrition.
When we repeated her testing, her Omega-3 Index had increased to 8.9 percent.
During that same period, something else changed.
Her severe menstrual cramps and discomfort were no longer a major part of her life.
As a father, I was incredibly grateful.
As a clinical nutritionist, the experience affected me in another way.
Until then, I had understood the science of cell membrane fluidity.
I understood phospholipids.
I understood omega-3 fatty acids.
I understood how they become incorporated into cell membranes.
But watching this unfold in someone I loved brought the science to life in a way I had never experienced before.
It reminded me that healthy cells are not simply an interesting scientific concept.
They influence real people living real lives.
Can I say that improving her Omega-3 Index alone caused those changes?
No.
Menstrual health is influenced by many factors, including genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress, sleep, physical activity, and overall health.
That would be far too simplistic.
But this experience reinforced something I had already begun believing.
When we improve the biological environment in which cells function, the body often has a greater opportunity to function as it was designed.
That realization became one of the turning points in my career.
What I Learned
Sometimes science becomes personal.
When it does, it has the power to change not only what we know, but also the questions we ask.
For me, Felicity’s experience reinforced the importance of looking beyond symptoms and paying closer attention to the health of the cells themselves.
Clinical Observation #2
My Mother
Another experience that deeply influenced my thinking involved my mother.
She is one of the strongest women I know.
She is a three-time breast cancer survivor.
Years ago, she also underwent the placement of three coronary stents to improve blood flow to her heart.
Like many people who are trying to improve their health, my mother believed she was doing the right things.
One of those things was taking an omega-3 supplement every day.
She had been faithfully taking OmegaXL®, believing it was supporting her health.
Rather than assuming it was working, I encouraged her to measure her cellular health.
Her Omega-3 Index measured 3.1 percent.
Despite taking an omega-3 supplement consistently, her Omega-3 Index remained well below the range that many researchers associate with higher omega-3 status. ¹
Instead of guessing, we changed our approach.
She began using BalanceOil+, and after several months we repeated her testing.
Her Omega-3 Index increased to 8.7 percent.
More importantly, the fatty acid composition of her cell membranes changed dramatically.
For me, this observation had very little to do with comparing one product to another.
The lesson was much bigger.
It reminded me that we should never assume a supplement is producing the biological change we hope it is producing.
Whenever possible…
Measure.
That simple philosophy has guided much of my work ever since.
As a nutrition professional, I believe measurements help us move beyond marketing claims and personal opinions.
They allow us to look at biology.
What I Learned
Good intentions matter.
Taking action matters.
But when objective measurements are available, they provide an opportunity to understand whether our efforts are producing meaningful biological change.
That experience reinforced another lesson that has stayed with me throughout my career.
Never guess when you can measure.
A Pattern Was Beginning to Emerge
At first, I thought these experiences might simply be isolated observations.
One involved my daughter.
The other involved my mother.
Different generations.
Different health histories.
Different goals.
Yet both reminded me of something I couldn’t ignore.
The conversation kept coming back to the same place.
The health of the cell.
The health of the cell membrane.
And the importance of measuring biology instead of making assumptions.
As the years passed, similar observations continued appearing in my nutrition practice.
Clients came to me for completely different reasons.
Weight loss.
High blood pressure.
Insulin resistance.
Dry eyes.
Menopausal symptoms.
At first, those challenges seemed unrelated.
But once we began measuring cellular health, I noticed patterns that encouraged me to continue asking questions and studying the science.
Some of those observations surprised even me.
I’ll share those next.
Clinical Observation #3
Sandy
One of the clients who made a lasting impression on me was Sandy.
When we first met, Sandy had been taking medication for high blood pressure for thirty-seven years. She had also been told she had insulin resistance, a condition in which the body’s cells do not respond normally to insulin.
Like many people, Sandy wanted to improve her health. She wasn’t looking for a miracle. She simply wanted to know if there was a better path forward.
One of the first things we measured was her cellular health.
Her Omega-3 Index measured 4.0 percent.
Her fatty acid fluidity ratio, a marker that reflects the balance of fatty acids within the cell membrane, measured 9.8 to 1.
These results suggested there was considerable room for improvement in the fatty acid composition of her cell membranes.
Together, we focused on improving her nutrition and supporting healthier cellular function. Over time, we repeated her testing.
Her Omega-3 Index increased to 10.3 percent.
Her fatty acid fluidity ratio improved from 9.8 to 1 to 3.8 to 1.
Something else changed.
Working closely with her healthcare provider, Sandy eventually discontinued the blood pressure medication she had taken for nearly four decades.
Her follow-up evaluations also showed that she no longer met the criteria for insulin resistance.
Can I conclude that improving her cell membrane composition alone caused those changes?
No.
That would ignore the complexity of human biology.
Blood pressure and insulin sensitivity are influenced by many factors, including nutrition, physical activity, body weight, genetics, medications, stress, sleep, and overall health.
However, Sandy’s experience reinforced something I had been observing for years.
Healthy cells create a healthier biological environment in which the body can function.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
What I Learned
Treating symptoms is important.
Creating a healthier biological foundation may be just as important.
Clinical Observation #4
Lynn
Lynn came to me feeling frustrated.
She was 53 years old, weighed approximately 160 pounds, exercised regularly, and ate what most people would describe as a healthy diet.
Despite doing many of the “right” things, her weight had stopped changing.
She wondered if it was simply because she was getting older.
She wondered if it was because she was entering perimenopause.
She wondered if there was anything else she could do.
Instead of immediately changing her diet, we decided to learn more about her biology.
Her Omega-3 Index measured 3.1 percent.
Over the following months, we focused on improving her nutritional status and supporting healthier cell membrane composition.
When we repeated her testing, her Omega-3 Index had increased to 9.0 percent.
During that same period, her weight gradually decreased from approximately 160 pounds to 137 pounds.
Then something unexpected happened.
Lynn shared that although she had gone approximately eight months without a menstrual cycle and believed she was transitioning into menopause, her menstrual cycle returned.
She also reported that the menopausal symptoms she had been experiencing had disappeared.
Can I say that improving her Omega-3 Index alone caused those changes?
No.
Weight regulation and hormonal health are influenced by many biological and lifestyle factors.
But Lynn’s experience reminded me that the human body is remarkably interconnected.
Sometimes when we improve the body’s foundation, improvements occur in places we never expected.
What I Learned
The body doesn’t function as isolated organs.
It functions as one connected system.
Healthy cells support that system.
Clinical Observation #5
When One Story Became Thirty-Four
One observation became impossible for me to ignore.
Over the years, thirty-four different clients independently shared that their chronic dry eye symptoms improved after improving their measured omega-3 status and cellular health.
Different ages.
Different occupations.
Different lifestyles.
Different medical histories.
Different reasons for seeking help.
Yet many described remarkably similar experiences.
Initially, I thought these stories might simply be coincidence.
Then another person shared the same observation.
Then another.
Eventually, I realized this pattern deserved my attention.
These experiences encouraged me to explore the growing body of scientific literature examining omega-3 fatty acids and ocular surface health. Researchers have reported that omega-3 fatty acids may support tear film stability and help some individuals with dry eye symptoms, although research continues in this area. ²
Again, these observations do not prove cause and effect.
But they do remind us of something important.
Repeated observations often become the beginning of better questions.
And better questions often lead to better research.
What I Learned
Science often begins with curiosity.
When similar observations occur repeatedly, they deserve thoughtful investigation rather than immediate dismissal.
The Common Thread
At first glance, these stories seem completely unrelated.
A young woman experiencing severe menstrual discomfort.
A mother who believed she was doing everything possible to support her health.
A woman living with high blood pressure and insulin resistance.
A client frustrated by stalled weight loss.
Dozens of people struggling with chronic dry eyes.
Different people.
Different symptoms.
Different goals.
Yet every story brought me back to the same place.
Healthy cells.
More specifically…
Healthy cell membranes.
That realization changed the way I think about nutrition.
It changed the way I interpret laboratory results.
It changed the questions I ask.
Today, I no longer begin by asking only,
“What symptom are we trying to improve?”
I also ask,
“What is happening at the cellular level?”
That question has shaped my work for more than three decades.
The Most Important Lesson I’ve Learned
After more than thirty years of helping people improve their health, I don’t believe the biggest problem is that people don’t care.
I believe the biggest problem is that most people have never been taught to think about health from the cellular level.
Most people have never heard the term cell membrane fluidity.
Most people don’t know that the fatty acid composition of their cell membranes can be measured.
Most people don’t realize that every heartbeat…
Every thought…
Every hormone…
Every muscle contraction…
Every immune response…
depends on healthy cells functioning as they were designed.
You cannot intentionally improve something you don’t know exists.
That is one of the reasons I wrote this article.
Not to convince you that one nutrient is the answer.
Not to convince you that one supplement is the answer.
Not to convince you that one laboratory test is the answer.
Health is far more complex than that.
I wrote this article because I believe healthy cells deserve a much larger place in the conversation about health.
When we begin asking better questions…
We often begin making better decisions.
And sometimes…
Better decisions create healthier lives.
The next question becomes…
If cellular health is so important…, how do we measure it?
From Guessing to Knowing
If there’s one lesson I’ve learned after more than thirty years of helping people improve their health, it’s this:
The best health decisions begin with good information.
Throughout this article, I’ve encouraged you to think differently about health.
Not because I believe symptoms don’t matter.
They absolutely do.
Symptoms are often what motivate us to seek help.
But symptoms tell only part of the story.
Many of the biological changes that influence our health begin long before we notice them.
That’s why I believe it’s important to ask two questions.
How do I feel?
And…
What is happening inside my body?
Those two questions work together.
One helps us understand our symptoms.
The other helps us better understand our biology.
Become an Informed Patient
One of my greatest hopes is that this article encourages you to become an informed partner in your own healthcare.
Ask questions.
Read the science.
Have meaningful conversations with your physician and other healthcare professionals.
Don’t be afraid to learn something new.
Science continues to evolve.
So should we.
Over the years, we’ve learned more about cholesterol.
We’ve learned more about inflammation.
We’ve learned more about the gut microbiome.
We’ve learned more about insulin resistance.
Today, we’re learning more about cellular health.
Every new discovery gives us another opportunity to better understand the remarkable body we’ve been given.
Measure Whenever You Can
One philosophy has guided my work for more than three decades.
Whenever possible…
Replace assumptions with measurements.
If you’re concerned about your blood pressure…
Measure it.
If you’re concerned about your blood sugar…
Measure it.
If you’re concerned about your cholesterol…
Measure it.
If you’re concerned about your vitamin D status…
Measure it.
The same principle applies to cellular health.

Not because measurements solve every problem.

Knowledge doesn’t guarantee better health.

That’s why I no longer begin by asking only, “How do we help someone feel better?”
I also ask, “How do we help their cells function at their best?”
My hope is that, after reading this article, you’ll begin asking that question too.
Because feeling better is important.
Becoming healthier is the goal.
