Sleep Can Depress Immunity
By Diet Free Life
Monday, June 30, 2008

Lack of sleep can not only play a role in weight gain and interfere with your ability to trim your waistline - losing sleep can depress immunity. However, the number of immune cells rises and falls naturally in healthy people.

To optimize your metabolism and immunity - make it your goal to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily. If this is too difficult, do what you can to at least take short naps once or twice daily.

By Josue Cano
Tuesday, June 24, 2008

This week we begin a new “weekly” feature on Diet Free Life.com where restaurants get reviewed to determine whether or not they’re waistline friendly.

Our first review is with a Ventura County, California small-chain of breakfast restaurants called Eggs ‘n’ Things. Even though you may not live in Ventura County, California – this review can still be helpful because most communities have a local café that is focused primarily on breakfast. So, the tips and suggestions on how to make the most of this type of restaurant will benefit you regardless of where you find yourself dining. (Read Review)

Good Habits Can Come Easy
By Robert Ferguson
Monday, June 23, 2008

Over the weekend I was reminded of one of my favorite Aristotle quotes where he said: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

I share this quote to inspire you to evaluate your eating and exercise habits. Though it is not an easy task - the short term pain of implementing new habits does result in long-term gain. To the contrary, it is also true that those who settle for immediate gratification or short-term gain almost always experience long-term pain.

This said: the outcome of making helpful nutrition and regular fitness habitual is that you bridge the gap between what you know (e.g., eating healthfully, exercising regularly) and what you do (e.g., actions, behavior), and you feel better about yourself both on the outside and inside.

Make this day -- this week your masterpiece. Good luck!

Maltodextrin Gets Thumb Up!
By Diet Free Life
Sunday, June 22, 2008

At Diet Free Life we get questions about a multitude of additives listed as an ingredient products. Though it seems a large majority of the additives lean toward the "avoid list" - Maltodextrin gets a thumb up (this is a positive alert).

Made from starch (in the US, this starch is usually rice, corn or potato; elsewhere, such as in Europe, it is commonly wheat), some maltodextrins are easily digested and absorbed, while others are chemically processed so that they are "resistant" - they can't be broken down by digestive enzymes. This is what makes most maltodextrins an isolated fiber. In addition to helping you keep the taste in your food, these resistant maltodextrins may help keep your blood sugar levels check so that you can reduce your waistline.

Maltodextrin is often found in canned fruit, salad dressing, instant pudding, supplement energy bars and other "health oriented" products.
