Kelvin Boston

Kelvin Boston is a sought-after public speaker, distinguished financial journalist and best-selling author who believes that financial education is the key that unlocks the doors to financial success.

Boston is the executive producer and host of the Moneywise with Kelvin Boston public television series. He is also the author of the best-selling book, Smart Money Moves For African Americans (Putnam), and Who’s Afraid to Be A Millionaire? (Wiley, John & Sons, Inc.). The New York Times referred to Boston as an “outspoken voice for economic empowerment.”

Kelvin Boston grew up in the public housing projects of South Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating from Lincoln University (PA.), he returned home to organize a housing counseling service to assist lowincome families in becoming homeowners. Today, the South Wilmington Housing Counseling Service is one of the leading community housing development organizations in Delaware.

In 1980, Boston moved to Toledo, Ohio and began his career as a financial planner with one of the nation’s leading financial planning companies, American Express Financial Advisors. During his tenure at American Express Financial Advisors, he became the Mid-West Regional Manager for Financial Planning.

In 1990, Boston moved to Detroit, Michigan to produce the nation’s first weekly financial television series for people of color — Financial Insight. After airing on the Barden Cable Channel for a year, the Financial Insight series was renamed the Color of Money and added to the programming schedule of WTVS – Detroit’s public television station. By 1992, the Color of Money featuring Kelvin Boston was airing on more
than two hundred public television stations nationwide.

The Color of Money series premiered on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 1994, becoming the first weekly financial series to air on BET. In 1996, the Color of Money made its debut on the Knowledge TV cable network and reached more than 22 million homes. That same year the series was renamed Moneywise with Kelvin Boston.

In 2000, Moneywise with Kelvin Boston became an official PBS series and began airing on public television stations nationwide. Today, Moneywise with Kelvin Boston is considered public television’s (PBS) premiere multi-cultural financial affairs television series. In 2003, Moneywise was distributed to more than 83 million households nation wide. Today, in addition to airing on public television stations,
Moneywise also airs on the Armed Forces Television Network where it reaches 800,000 military households in 177 countries around the world.

In 2002, the Moneywise Minute with Kelvin Boston premiered on the ABC Urban Radio Network, an informative 60-second financial vignette reflecting the financial aspirations of middle-income urban Americans. The Moneywise Minute ABC Radio Program reached 1.3 million urban listeners a week. Moneywise Minute is currently being reformatted for radio syndication.

On March 14, 2003 Kelvin Boston was awarded the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s (NCRC) annual award for promoting economic justice. Boston’s won the “Color of Money” award for producing the Moneywise PBS series. The “Color of Money” award recognizes the nation’s best news, editorial or documentary coverage of economic justice issues.

In 2004 Boston Media, LLC and New River Media, Inc. produced the first Moneywise television special entitled “Who’s Afraid To Be A Millionaire?” This special (taped before a live audience) features host Kelvin Boston and his trademark use of jargon-free language, humor and positive thinking to motivate viewers to take control of their personal finances. The “Who’s Afraid To Be A Millionaire?” sixty-minute special will air on public television stations nationwide in 2005.
